Windows 7 compatibility issues
« on: November 11, 2009, 04:49:25 pm »

I've just installed FileSeek on Windows 7.  I really like the way it presents the keyword in context.  But while the website claims Win7 compatibility issue, it does NOT appear as shell extension in the context menu when you rightclick on a folder.  I assume there is a workaround for this at present... I am not afraid to manually edit the registry.  Seems like it might be possible to place an entry here:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\ShellEx\ContextMenuHandlers
Any step-by-step instructions would be appreciated.

Also as a side note... *why* does FileSeek not include an option (like XP search always had) and like Search Everything, copernic and filepro have... to search only on file/folder names... and to do so using the same instantaneous approach that Search Everything from voidtools does.  It is GREAT for its purpose and DOES load as shell enhancement  With that enhancement, seems like FileSeek should be the search tool of choice for Windows 7.  I hope this feature can be added soon... and when it is I would like to feature it in our customer newsletters

Thanks

did you enable the folder context menus in the FileSeek Settings window? I use FileSeek in Windows 7 x64 everyday and the context menus work perfectly, once they are enabled. :) As for searching everything, multiple location searches is coming in the next FileSeek release. Thanks!

OK... my error... In the options there is indeed the ability to enable context menu settings.  I'm not clear why that is not done by deafult or why at least it is not presented as an option during a wizard-type install.  As a software developer I can state from experience that that the majority of users trying the program will not find it in the options without prompting.  But it does the job fine in Win7 once enabled... thanks.

As for "location searches coming in the next FileSeek release" I am not sure that addresses my concern or if it does, then perhaps you could clarify that, but my comment was simply that whereas FS appears to search content quite thoroughly, this is a long and laborious process for large folders with thousands of files.  Whereas a search simply on filenames can be accomplished in a split second as accomplished by "Everything Search".  Its major failing is that it has no ability to search content which is where FS shines... however without the ability to do a limited searech on file names only, and accomplish it in a second or two, then "Everything Search" remains my search tool of choice for basic searches on filename.  I hope it can be added and then I will certainly feature it as the freeware search option of choice for Windows 7.

This is an excellent idea, I'll make a note of updating the installer before the next release. :) Thanks!

enable context menu settings

I would prefer it as an option during the install than installed by default.

"Everything Search"

It is my understanding Everything Search Engine by voidtools creates an index / database.  From what I have read it is great at what it does, but a big reason I use FileSeek is because it doesn't build an index / database.  If FileSeek goes this route, I hope this will be an option as well.

Thank you,

Kevin

I won't be doing anything with indexing in FileSeek. I wrote it to be small, and lightweight and I intend to keep it that way. The context menu items will definitely be an option, don't worry. I hate it when applications create shortcuts and menu items all over the place too. :)
