The first episode in a new web series called Doctor Horrible aired last night. Normally I wouldn’t be too excited about a new web video, but this one is special. It is the brain child of a genius named Joss Whedon. Fellow nerds will remember Joss as the man behind hit TV shows such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly. Firefly is one of my all-time favourite shows, so you can imagine how excited I was when I heard that one of the main characters from Firefly would also be starring in Doctor Horrible. Well, episode 1 of Doctor Horrible was super-fantastic. It is a bizarre mix of music and comedy, with awkward, strange characters. I won’t spoil any of the plot, instead I’ll talk about the new delivery model. The show was aired on Tuesday and is available to stream for free for the next 2 days or for purchase in iTunes for $1.99. After the 2 days it will only be available for purchase in iTunes until the DVD is released which promises to have special content. This bypasses all the conventional ways to make money from a TV show, and I hope they succeed. The only downside to the show is that there will only be 3 episodes. But, I guess Joss needs time to work on his next project, Dollhouse, which I am eagerly looking forward to.
